Set to Shape the Future of Active Citizenship

Landscape education for transitions is the final conference of the Erasmus Project EDULANDS for transitions, collaborative tools to connect the school with the landscape, a two-years project to develop new methodologies and tools to promote a shift in the educational framework for social and environmental transition. Between 2021 and 2023 EduLands for Transitions set up an international and interdisciplinary co-designing process for landscape connection in education to empower youths, foster their sense of belonging to the places and promote active responsible citizenship, even in vulnerable contexts. The project focuses on developing ecosocial and green competences to help students to recognize the value of local communities, cultural and natural heritage by connecting the school to nearby landscapes
Landscape connection in education is crucial to form active citizenship aware of the transition towards an environmentally and socially sustainable future. The study of historical sources and the evolution of the territory can be a starting point for making well-considered decisions on transformations. Then, the direct experience of places, the understanding and sharing of perceptions, sensations and interpretations, as well as the analysis of the inner landscapes of individuals can help form more aware young people, to enable them to preserve and intervene in their life environment in a careful way, and of facing and leading change. According to this vision, education must go beyond the walls of the school to permeate the entire landscape, especially that of the neighborhood, where a community of professionals works for the preservation and diffusion of eco-social values, and where transitional phenomena occur that are an example, stimulus and active education for young people.
This Conference is the final step of the research. It will present and discuss the project experience and results, including the analog and digital didactical tools set up during the process. The seminar is open to teachers, scholars, artists and educators, active in formal and informal contexts and will offer workshops for educational paths co-design.
Similar experiences and good practices are welcomed to be shared and discussed to enlarge the collaboration network. The meeting will have a practice-oriented approach, favoring presentations of concrete experiences and tools. Therefore, non-strictly academic presentations and different formats and/or proposals for interactive activities are also appreciated. The main questions we would like to answer are:
How place-based education can open schools to the proximity landscape?
How can we empower young people through knowledge of their nearby landscape?
How can schools reach out to the eco-social agents of the territory and institutions, and create channels for their participation?

Topics to be explored during the event include landscape education, ecological, social, and cultural transition, school and locality engagement, citizenship, sustainable development, landscape preservation, landscape representation and communication, cultural heritage education, digital transformation, formal and informal education, inclusion (multiculturalism, social cohesion, intergenerational dialogue), and European policies.

Where is going to be carried out?
The event will be hosted at at Politecnico di Milano (Piazza Leonardo da Vinci 32, 20133 Milano), providing an ideal setting for attendees to engage in discussions, workshops, and networking opportunities. Attendance at the conference is free, but registration is mandatory. The social gathering, however, requires separate registration and payment. Early registration will receive priority for the training event.

Symposium's scientific coordination is led by Paola Branduini, Camilla Casonato and Mónica G Candela, with a distinguished scientific committee comprising experts from various fields. Selected contributions from the symposium will be considered for a publication that will gather reflections emerging from the conference, further fostering the ongoing dialogue on landscape education. This symposium promises to be a significant milestone in the journey to equip young people with the knowledge and awareness needed to lead society towards a sustainable and harmonious future.
