    Solar Sound LAB

University of Applied Arts Vienna (UAAV)
    Author/s
    Galina Emelina
University of Applied Arts Vienna (UAAV), Oskar Kokoschka-Platz 2, 1010 Wien, Austria

Beginning with the question, how to plan and execute an energy independent music event and which kind of technical components would be needed for this kind of endeavour, one has to concretely analyse the climatic conditions of the landscape, which is of interest for a future solar event. The core element of the solar soundsystem consist in the DIY construction of a 600-watt-strong sound amplificator, which is operable with direct current.

At the same time, the ambition of the ‚Solar Sonics‘ Collective, consisting of artists, makers and activists from Australia, Germany and Portugal, has been from the beginning to educate the wider public and disseminate this knowledge in the form of an open source construction manual.

    Learning objetives and goals

The application of abstract and theoretical electrophysics and chemistry knowledge onto the direct contextual landscape of the living environment. The understanding and calculation of local climate events and the harvestable solar energy at the concrete event place in the surrounding landscape. The fostering of independent thinking as well as critical understanding of “sustainability”. The self-guided planning and carrying out of a cultural community event is supposed to strengthen mutual interconnectedness and interdisciplinary thinking.

    Methodology

    Pedagogical methodology

The Solar Sound Lab could be seen as a viewpoint and approach towards the geographical landscape of the University of Applied Arts Vienna through the question of the practical applicability of renewable energy, in particular solar energy, in connection with music and sound technology as well as cultural and event organisation

    Type of collaborative action
Space where the experience is carried out

Indoors with a access to a rooftop or terrace where the photovoltaic module could be operated.

Where the learning experience has been developed
    Educational materials and/or resources needed
    1. Theory input: Classroom with basic learning facilities, Beamer, Work Sheets,
    2. Practical Workshop: Electricity, Soldering stations
    3. Material for Amp Construction: 1 Box from material of choice, s.a. plastics, wood, etc., 1 Amplificator Chip, 1 DC/DC Converter, 4 Potentiometer, 1 Ventilator, 2 RCA inputs, 1 On/off Switch, 3 Speaker knobs, 1 Pair of battery clamppliers, Screws, Cables…

    Final evaluation

The Solar Sound Lab holds a lot of potential for a fruitful S.T.E.A.M. project. However, for its usability in the classroom it needs to be scaled down and adjusted, so that it is made suitable for the according school curriculum at hand, as well as the target group and their respective knowledge. The described vision and aim to plan and execute a whole cultural event is probably most suitable for the target group of young adults/students in a summer school program with prior technical knowledge.

For a younger audience, the underlying background theory might be to large and complex in order to carry out the project on the same level. Therefore, I would suggest a sclaed down and minimalized version of a table-size bluetooth loudspeaker building process.
